The Grio

My African documentary about Phyllis Keino of Lewa Childrens home, has been featured on the Grio.

TheGrio.com is the first video-centric news community site devoted to providing African Americans with stories and perspectives that appeal to them but are underrepresented in existing national news outlets. TheGrio features aggregated and original video packages, news articles, and blogs on topics from breaking news, politics, health, business, and entertainment, which concern its niche audience.

I am extremely happy to have Phyllis on this excellent site.

"Mr. Crack" new Documentary short

This is s piece I began with Taylor Materne and Mike Urdaneta a few years back. I've finally decided to put it up for an audience.

Bobby Paige aka "Mr. Crack" regularly drives his "Crack-Mobile" around Harlem in an attempt to inform children about the dangers of drugs. He funds his cause by selling t-shirts and his book "Mr. Crack" out the back of the "Crack-Mobile".

Paige has a unique take on his life as a former drug dealer and pimp during New York's tumultuous 70's and 80's. There is often a wistfulness in his denouncement of the life he formerly led.

Please enjoy:

Africa is Important because of this woman

I took on the project of covering the Lewa Children's home in Kenya because I wanted give something back to Africa. I say give back, because I thought having a six week safari complete with game drives and nature camping without helping African's would be absurdly selfish.

Not long after I rumbled into Phyllis Keino's Lewa home I soon learned that I didn't have a clue what selflessness meant until that very moment. What Phyllis, Jos, Susan and the rest of the Lewa saints have done to a small piece of Kenya goes beyond the definition of caring.

I am truly unable to put in words what I discovered at Lewa Childrens home and Baraka Farm. Luckily I am able to put it into documentary form. Please watch these videos and, please give anything you can to Bread and Water for Africa. You can be assured that your money will go to one of the Nobelist causes on this small world.

Please watch these videos for yourself and visit my youtube page to dig deeper.

Clara's book deal

Publisher's Weekly has just reported on our Cookbook:

SMP Lands YouTube Fav Cannucciari

by Matthew Thornton -- Publishers Weekly, 3/25/2009 4:01:00 PM

Michael Flamini at St. Martin’s beat two other bidders in an auction for Clara’s Kitchen: Wisdom, Memories and Recipes from the Great Depression; Sharon Bowers at the Miller Agency sold world rights. Clara Cannucciari, the 93-year-old grandmother who has become a YouTube and Facebook sensation through films created by her grandson, Chris Cannucciari, will share the dishes she ate during the Depression in the book. She’ll also tell stories about hard times, spinning out a philosophy of how to pull oneself up by the bootstraps when the going gets rough.

Chris Cannucciari will co-write the book, and SMP will publish in October of this year in anticipation of the holiday season. Clara’s YouTube videos, soon to be collected on DVD, have now received over 250,000 hits.

Onion News Network 200th episode!

This is going to be bigger than Battlestar Galactica. Today is the release of the Onion's ONN 200th episode. I can't believe we have done that many. Finding ways to rip off all of the obnoxious news media outlets has been a personal joy. I think we've done a great job.

Great Depression Cooking with Clara cookbook

I just spent the weekend with Clara discussing how we will layout the Cookbook which will come out late October through St. Martins Press. We went over some new stories and recipes that will make this Cookbook as unique as we have made the show.
